EspañolOn the anniversary of the Battle of La Victoria and Youth Day, both political camps in Venezuela, the ruling party and the opposition, called for various marches nationwide.

For the opposition, Representative Maráa Corina Machado and national coordinator of the Popular Will Party (Voluntad Popular), Leopoldo López, called on people to march in opposition to the county’s major problems: economic insecurity, shortages, inflation, and the aggressive actions of police toward college students during recent protests. Students from varied campuses nationwide organized marches that took place in major cities throughout the country, including the capital Caracas.

The former leading presidential candidate for the opposition, Henrique Capriles, also participated. He led the march in Caracas, from Plaza Venenzuela to its destination, the attorney general’s office, to demand the release of students detained last Friday in Táchira state.

For his part, President Nicolás Maduro called for a student march of ruling party supporters and members of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela to be held in different parts of the country. The principal street action was in the city of La Victoria, Aragua.
