The San Diego Tunnel Task Force has discovered a 2.4 mile-long, “sophisticated” drug smuggling tunnel between San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Mexico. This is not the first tunnel of its kind to be discovered, though. According to US authorities, they have discovered over 75 similar tunnels in the past five years. This particular tunnel was apparently associated with the Sinaloa drug cartel, headed by “El Chapo” Guzmán.
US attorney for the San Diego region, Laura Duffy, stated, “These cartels have spent years and tens of millions of dollars trying to create a secret underworld of passages so they can move large quantities of drugs.” The San Diego/Tijuana region has a clay-like soil that allows for easy digging. Cartels in other parts of the border have used underground drainage tunnels.
