EspañolThe Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on Tuesday released the PISA exam results, for a set of tests taken in 2012 that measure skills in math, language, and science in 15-year-old students. The results in Latin America were beyond poor and well below the average for the participating countries.
Chile ranked 51st, Uruguay 55th, Mexico 53rd, Costa Rica 56th, Brasil 58th, and Argentina 59th. Out of 65 countries, Colombia (62) and Peru (65) had the lowest scores of the region, despite their recent economic growth and participation in international markets.
The first ten places primarily went to Asian countries and territories: Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Macau, Japan, as well as Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Students — 510,000 of them — take the PISA exams every three years in 34 OECD countries, alongside 31 associated countries and territories. In total, these participants represent 80 percent of the world’s population.
