Barbers in Ontario, Canada, are now subject to occupational licensing barriers from the Ontario College of Trades. Either they comply or risk being forced to pay fines. First time offenders operating without a license will be required to pay $195 as employees and $295 as employers.
To get licensed, barbers must learn a new curriculum that includes highlights, perms, and coloring.
“Now you have to go to school; you have to put in 2,000 hours; you have to pay [CA]$5,000; you have to learn how to perm and color and bleach and wave and God knows what. I don’t even know any of that stuff, and I don’t want to know,” said Frank Olszynko, who has been cutting hair since the 1960s.
