Venezuelan authorities have detained one of the primary foreign reporters covering the nation’s economic difficulties. They first took Jim Wyss of the Miami Herald into custody on Thursday, and he remains out of reach, while the Ministry of Information has not responded to questions on the matter. According to an El Universal journalist, he is in a military intelligence office in San Cristóbal, Táchira.
“There doesn’t seem to be any basis for his detention and we’re trying to figure out what’s going on. We are asking that Jim Wyss be released immediately,” says Aminda Marqués Gonzalez, the Herald’s executive editor.
According to a Venezuelan media watchdog organization, the Instituto Prensa y Sociedad, Wyss is the 11th journalist detained in Venezuela this year.
