A Mexican chemical engineer, Sergio Jesus Rico Velasco, has developed and patented “Solid Rain,” a powder that absorbs water and releases it slowly over a year when placed in soil for crops. The product helps plants survive and thrive in the middle of a drought.
The Mexican company has been selling the product quietly over ten years in that country — but growing concerns about a scarcity of water have generated an incentive to introduce Solid Rain to the global market.
Solid Rain can cost up to US$1,300 for 50 kilograms to use on one hectare of soil.
