EspañolOn Sunday, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, confirmed the announcement given by the general secretary of Frente Farabundo Martí de Liberación Nacional (FMLN), Medardo González, that El Savador will join Petrocaribe.
The energy initiative was launched by Venezuela to provide crude oil in favorable conditions to Central American and Caribbean countries. The Petrocaribe group currently includes Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Granada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Santa Lucia, Suriname, and Venezuela.
The new president of El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, presented the application for membership to Maduro in advance during his visit to Caracas on May 1.
During a television broadcast, Maduro said that Sánchez’s victory in El Salvador signals that “the left on this continent continues on its path to victory, in peace. What we want is Latin America as a peaceful land.”
