Spanish.- Following the footsteps of his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took sides in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which erupted on October 7th with the attack perpetrated by the Palestinian terrorist group on Israeli territory, resulting in the deaths of more than 1200 people. The similarities are quite important to mention. Lula, like Petro, accused Israel of “genocide,” comparing the Jewish state to Nazism, and garnered sympathy from Hamas by openly siding with the Islamists. However, there is a difference. In Colombia, there were no consequences beyond isolated criticisms from the most important opposition figures. In Brazil, on the other hand, the issue is rallying opponents, and there is a institutional response in sight through a request for Lula’s impeachment.
At least 33 lawmakers already signed the request this Sunday, reminiscent of the abrupt ousting of Dilma Rousseff from power in 2016 when the Senate approved impeachment proceedings against her. According to Brazilian media reports, opposition lawmakers decided to file an impeachment request against Lula in the Chamber of Deputies, with Carla Zambelli – from the Liberal Party where former President Jair Bolsonaro is a member – leading the process.

The request is based on Article 5 of the Law of Crimes of Responsibility, which establishes that having committed an “act of hostility against a foreign nation, exposed the Republic to the danger of war, or compromised neutrality” are possible grounds for loss of mandate. In this sense, federal deputy Bia Kicis, also from the Liberal Party, announced that she and other lawmakers are “preparing an impeachment request against Lula due to his hostile attitudes toward the State of Israel.”}

Immediately after, Zambelli published on her X account the names of the 33 lawmakers who have already signed the request, adding that the position taken by the Brazilian president in the last hours regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas “could bring serious consequences for the Brazilian people.” In fact, the main Israeli entities in Brazil condemned Lula’s statements this Sunday and accused him of “offending the memory of Holocaust victims” by abandoning with his position “the tradition of balance and dialogue-seeking of Brazilian foreign policy.”
Entrei com pedido de impeachment de Lula, nos termos do artigo 5º da Lei 1.079/50, em conjunto com outros parlamentares.

Lula da Silva has unleashed a political storm in his country where impeachment against him is already being considered, as during his visit to Ethiopia, where he participates in the 37th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), he told the press of that country that “what is happening in the Gaza Strip is not a war, it is a genocide.” To make matters worse, he added that the current war in the Middle East “between a very prepared army against women and children” had not happened before in history, except “when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.”
Lula is another Hamas figure
With this statement, the Brazilian president joined Gustavo Petro in the list of Western leaders praised by Hamas. Just as in October, a Telegram account in favor of the Palestinian terrorist group shared the words of the Colombian president, now it was Lula’s turn to become a figure applauded by Islamists.
“We in the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) appreciate the statement of Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who described what our Palestinian people are being subjected to in the Gaza Strip as a Holocaust, and that what the Zionists must do today in Gaza is the same as what the Nazi Hitler did with the Jews during the Second World War,” the Islamic extremists stated on Telegram, taking the opportunity to ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to consider Lula’s statement.
