EspañolForeign Minister of Uruguay Luis Almagro confirmed on Monday that the South American country will receive at least 120 refugees in September, among them children and families, escaping Syria’s civil war.
“These are families in a state of total vulnerability, victims of armed conflict. They are orphans or children accompanied by adults in different conditions,” the minister told the Uruguay Press.
Almagro said the refugee initiative launched by President José Mujica in May could be taken to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva within “a couple of weeks.”
In addition, the foreign minister said “progress” has been made in negotiations between Uruguay and the United States for the South American country to receive six prisoners from the US prison at Guantanamo in August.
