EspañolEcuador journalist Luis Eduardo Vivanco, editor of the newspaper La Hora, was forced to testify after publishing a tweet criticizing President Rafael Correa’s administration.
Officials said Vivanco tried to “confuse citizens by accusing the national government of corruption.”
The journalist published an image of dozens of rolls of banknotes seized in an operation against drug trafficking with the message: “These are the mattresses upon which the revolution rests.”
The Ministry of the Interior filed a complaint in response, accusing him of “intimidation.”
While Vivanco testified in the Public Prosecutor’s Office, dozens of journalists showed up on the surrounding streets to support him with shouts and posters reading: “Freedom of expression,” “I make this tweet mine” and “Be strong, Luis Eduardo.”

The investigation against the journalist could last between six months and a year.
“The situation mainly intends to intimidate me and others journalists into avoiding being critical on social media,” Eduardo Vivanco said.
