EspañolAccording to attorney Ángel Álvarez, the Panamanian Supreme Court’s decision to revoke María del Pilar Hurtado’s political asylum, on the grounds that it was unconstitutional, will go into effect on Tuesday, June 24.
Álvarez is one of the lawyers, along with Paulo Vega, that presented the case against the asylum granted to María del Pilar Hurtado, former head of Colombia’s now defunct Administrative Department of Security (DAS) from 2007 to 2009.
Hurtado will have to face the Colombian justice system over her alleged involvement in the illegal surveillance and wiretapping of journalists, judges, congressmen, and human rights activists during Álvaro Uribe’s administration.
Panamanian law states that “unconstitutionality rulings are enforced, without any recourse, three days after all parties have been notified,” which gives Hurtado until “next Tuesday at 5 p.m.,” explained Álvarez.
