EspañolOn Sunday, the progressive coalition Broad Front (FA) ratified its ticket for Uruguay’s October presidential elections. Former President Tabaré Vásquez (2005-2010) will be joined by the former head of the state-run oil company ANCAP, Raúl Sendic, as candidate for vice president.
“I put absolute trust and commitment in Raúl,” Vásquez told fellow party members who selected him as the presidential candidate for the Broad Front on June 1. With 158 out of 161 votes, FA overwhelmingly decided Sendic will join Vázquez to face the opposition parties.
Raúl Sendic was president of ANCAP from 2008 to 2013, and after having served as vice president, he temporarily served as Minister of Industry and Energy in Vázquez’s administration. He has also previously served as a legislator in Parliament from 2000 to 2005.
According to polls carried out by several consulting firms, Vázquez is the favorite to become president in October, or in the November runoff, which would secure a third consecutive term in power for the Broad Front.
