EspañolFour gunshots ended the life of Eliezer Otaiza, President of the Municipal Council of Libertador and a well-known Chavista leader, who was found by police today in Turgua, Venezuela. President Nicolás Maduro has ordered a nation-wide investigation.

The Minister of Interior and Justice, Miguel Rodríguez Torres, confirmed this morning that the councilman was found by the El Hatillo local police in the state of Miranda. He had last been seen alive in the area on Friday at a meeting with friends. The police later spotted his truck overturned, on the road between Monterrey and Ojo de Agua, which leads to the Simon Bolivar University. Officials reported that the Otaiza’s body will be taken to the National Assembly, where a memorial service will be held.

Otaiza’s first public office within the “Bolivarian revolution” was as a constituent during the 1999 Constituent Assembly of Venezuela. He then went on to become the head of DISIP, Venezuela’s premier intelligence agency. Former President Hugo Chávez had also appointed Otaiza as president of the National Land Institute. In December 2013, he successfully ran for councilman of Libertador as a member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela and was named President of the Municipal Council.

The Minister of Information and Communication, Delcy Rodriguez, announced through her Twitter account that President Nicolás Maduro has ordered a thorough investigation.
