Spanish.- It seemed that the situation with irregular crossings at the southern border of the United States couldn’t get any more complicated until a frontal clash erupted between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Biden Administration. Now, around 25 Republican states are expressing support for the border territory that receives thousands of undocumented immigrants and without going through authorized immigration points every day.
Florida, Virginia, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Alabama are some of the states which support Abbott. They criticize Biden’s stance, who opposed the installation of barbed wire in Texas and also to the Supreme Court because they ordered its removal, stating that it “prevented Border Patrol agents from accessing the area and performing their duties.”

So, this Ron DeSantis’ message takes more meaning now: “Can the federal government defy the law and force a state to allow a foreign invasion? James Madison didn’t think so…” he asserted at some point, referring to the fourth president in U.S. history and one of the framers of the country’s Constitution. His words not only set the stage for a struggle between Republican states and the federal government but also pose a problem for the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris duo in the midst of an election year.

The hashtag #StandWithTexas is trending on social media, while Abbott released a statement reminding that the federal government “has broken the pact between the United States and the states” by neglecting its duty to enforce federal rules protecting states, including current immigration laws. “Biden has refused to enforce these laws and has even violated them,” he wrote.
Indeed, Biden’s border management has failed. Even the decision of appointing Kamala Harris to lead the crisis did not help. The issue has grown to the extent that the number of illegal immigrants, since Biden took office, is approaching the number of births in the United States. From October 2022 to September 2023, over 2.4 million crossings were recorded, according to official data, and by the end of this year, it is estimated to reach three million. Not a promising figure for the Democratic Administration in an election year.
In the Capitol, things are not progressing much either. In the Senate, work is underway on a law similar to the defunct Title 42, which would only be mandatory if the figures on the southern border exceed 5,000 encounters with immigrants per day, according to Fox News. However, that would only bring more problems, as that expulsion measure would mean that 150,000 irregular migrants would still be entering per month. In a year, it would be 1.8 million people. In contrast, as reporter Bill Melugin mentions, “Trump’s highest year was the fiscal year 2019 with 850,000 crossings.”
