EspañolThe United States has asked Guatemala to extradite former Vice President of Guatemala Roxana Baldetti for drug trafficking charges, according to the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry.
Baldetti is currently under “preventive detention” while officials sort out the charges of corruption against her, which date back to her time in Otto Pérez Molina’s adminsitration between 2012 and 2015.
On February 24, both Baldetti and former Interior Minister Mauricio López were accused of drug trafficking by the United States. López, who is already in prison, was not listed on the request.

Both former public officials are accused by the US government of conspiring to distribute at least five kilograms of cocaine between January 2010 and May 2015, “with the intention and knowledge that cocaine would be illegally imported into the United States.”
Baldetti and Lopez were part of the government headed by retired General Otto Pérez Molina from the now-defunct Patriot Party. All three former officials are currently in custody for their participation in a corruption network that profited from bribes in Guatemala’s customs system.
