We all know the pathetic story. although It’s been a year, thanks to social media it seems like it was yesterday… If not for all of us, certainly last year’s Oscar night will stand in Chris Rock’s memory forever. That night Will Smith went nuts. That night Will Smith showed us a lot about himself that we didn’t need or wanted to know about: a) he has a lot of mental issues to deal with: b) he is a coward; c) he pushes his ego up to the point of using physical violence due to the extreme lack of self-esteem he suffers from; d) he is a jerk.
But to a certain degree It made me feel fine about myself: sort of, well, I’m not as insane as I thought I was. Thanks, Will.
Chris got smacked in the face by a very reactive-demented Will… and the show (The Academy Awards) went on. I’ve seen that video many many times just to catch Chris’ reaction. The look in face. The fear… the embarrassment… the surprise and repressed anger. Man, you got slapped live, not only in front of the entire planet… but probably even the crews of a couple of UFOs were stunned thinking: ‘See that shit? Let’s abort the invasion, these folks are wack!’.
Then, then the long wait would come. We’ve been waiting and waiting for nothing less than a mighty blow out of proportion and almost illegal revenge. We’ve been waiting for John Wick after his dog was killed and his car stolen. That’s us: we’re still in the middle of the Roman empire, eager to see any denigrating, obscene and dangerous spectacle, as we laugh and clap and post our witty and wise comments on tiktok.
Time went by, Chris didn’t say a word… actually we saved all the words for his Netflix special, ‘Chris Rock: Selective Outrage’. So… We wanted to see revenge? Our boy Chris gave it to us… but like a rap song written by a 12 years old angry and resentful wannabe.
Selective what?
I ain’t gonna use some fancy introduction for his special, ’cause to me it wasn’t ‘special’ at all. Yes, the first time I watched (and laughed my ass out) I ended with the feeling that Chris did it! He kicked Will as he deserved. But that was no more than the typical irrational reaction when you see what you want to see. But then, later on… while reflecting not only on the ‘jokes’ but on his approach and above all: his degree of intelligence and creativity I just got disappointed and saw the big picture: Chris Rock was as stupid as Will, but worst: childish.
I want to focus on the stuff that to me were an example of choosing an easy-dumb way instead of going epic and smart, which I think would not only have fulfilled the mission of ‘revenge’ but would have meant a step forward in Rock’s career. Because, although the great masses think otherwise, Chris took a leap back. A very unnecessary one.
And before I sink my teeth into the ‘revenge against Will and Jada’ thing, I’m going to mention a couple of clichés that were the complete opposite of what I really would have liked to see from such an established-larger-than-life comedian as Chris Rock.
No innovation
Man, you know how much people waited for the return of Chris after the ‘incident’? This show must have been spotless. And hour of let me blow your fucking mind and pee your pants (or panties) with my jokes. I wanted to see entirely brand new stuff. I can NOT believe Chris Rock is unable to create new material. But then he went on ‘white men think they’re losing the country’, almost the same lines he used back in his 2018 special ‘Culturershock’. Really? Come on. Don’t play the same card again. I got it the first time. Of course there was a lot of funny stuff during the show… but the Kardashians? Is it possible for a comedian not to mention that creepy family in order to accomplish a great routine? Comedians are (must be) a reflection of our times. Remember the great ones? Pryor? Murphy? Robin Williams? They didn’t shoot at the easy boring target, they wanted to climb as high as possible. Instead, Chris went into the abortion in a way I can only compare to (kids, google this guy) Andrew Dice Clay back in the late 80s. And then he jumped like a shark into the ‘Entanglement’ issue. Bro, even the guys on the UFOs saw it. So, regarding innovation Chris got a minus zero (like Elon’s cum).
Ok. Hold a sec: Anti-Woke? No Victim? The ‘revenge’
Chris said something like: ‘But I’m not a victim baby, you won’t ever see me on Oprah… crying’. According to the media the consensus is that Chris Rock stands as an anti-woke who didn’t victimize himself and destroyed Will Smith. And this is when finally, the special turns into a train wreck of hypocrisy. His ‘revenge’ was kinda like… I have this image of a kid that he was beaten by the school bully and days later he is in front of his classmates and he starts cursing and calling the bully a bitch over and over again and he even says that the bully’s girlfriend had sex with another boy and that’s why everyone knows the guy is a bitch. And he says it bitterly, almost crying with rage.
That’s the way I saw Chris Rock on his Netflix special. Almost trying to be a gangsta rapper with clever punching lyrics but without the tools to perform it.
How this guy has the nerve to say he is not a victim when for I don’t know how long he pretty much declared himself as one? Will was Ali; I was Pookie in New Jack City. Will is taller, bigger, stronger. I mean, this is one of the biggest victimizations I have ever seen in my life. And you dare to say you are not a victim? That’s not humor. That’s not funny. That’s a charade. That’s what insecure 12-year-olds do… not the big rich comedian who have been around for decades and (I’m not asking Rock to have Dave Chapelle’s brains) are supposed to bring in a huge Netflix special that started with very clever words… about words: ‘Anybody that says words hurt has never been punched in the face’.
But collapsed because of the very same stupidity that led Will Smith to slap him: the ego that can overcome intelligence and turns man into dumb beast… which you can laugh at, of course. I think for Chris Rock 99% of the special was not important, just one sentence, THE SENTENCE: ‘His wife was f***** her son’s friend’. That’s what it was all about. This is how he returned the slap to Will Smith. These are the jokes of the great comedians of our era.
