EspañolUruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez and German Chancellor Angela Merkel furthered two decades of negotiations regarding EU-Mercosur trade agreements during meetings this week.
Vázquez said at a press conference that he was committed to continuing negotiations for a trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union.
“Uruguay has historically advocated the demolition of barriers and the elimination of trade barriers that hinder and impede the free movement of goods in order to foster a fair, equitable and balanced global trade architecture, he said. “Today we reaffirm these convinced principles more than ever before.”
Merkel said Uruguay “is an engine of free trade agreements in the world” and acknowledged that neither country is “guilty” of preventing negotiations from advancing.
The chancellor noted Argentina and Brazil as an example but recalled that with the passage of time, the negotiations between the blocs will resume in March.

“In fact, during the bilateral meeting that Presidents Mauricio Macri and Michel Temer had in Brazil, they agreed that they will give priority to these negotiations, and I think we have a good partner for fair and equitable negotiations,” she said.
Despite this, Merkel did not want to discuss resistance showed by some partners in the EU, such as France, who continue to show a “special sensitivity” surrounding protecting its agricultural sector.
However, the German government said that Uruguay seems to be “everything” when talking about sustainable and intelligent agriculture.
