EspañolVenezuelans opposed to the regime of Nicolás Maduro will gather on May 30 to protest in different cities of Venezuela and around the world. The call was made by opposition leader Leopoldo López, who released a video from prison through a mobile phone, after the government moved fellow political prisoner Daniel Ceballos to a different prison.
In the video, López announced he was going on a hunger strike along with Ceballos, the former mayor of San Cristóbal in Táchira State. Leopoldo also called on people to protest peacefully on the streets of Venezuela on May 30, 2015.
The demands of the hunger strike and the protest include: scheduling congressional elections; the observation and presence of the European Union and the Organization of American States during congressional elections; the end of repression, prosecution, and censorship; and the release of Venezuelan political prisoners.
López was isolated and punished after the national government found out about his video and for having a cellphone.
Venezuelans around the country and the world are organizing to support the demands expressed by López. Several foreign cities have confirmed their participation, including Washington, DC, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Mexico, Santiago de Chile, Toronto, Panama, Costa Rica, Guadalajara, Cancún, and Madrid. The call is for the international community to stand for the right of Venezuelans to participate in fair elections, for the rights of political prisoners, and for an end to repression and censorship.
