EspañolThe Observatory of Violence in Honduras has decided to suspend the publication of homicide-rate reports, because the National Security Secretariat has denied access to information on violent deaths, according to El Heraldo of Honduras.
The observatory’s bulletins have been credible reports because of their rigor with processing data, and have led to the acknowledgement that Honduras has the highest homicide rate in the world. But due to the refusal of the National Security Secretariat to open the archives, there is no possibility of collating information; therefore, the observatory has decided to stop preparing reports.
Since 2013, the observatory and the Security Secretariat have been engaged in a “war of numbers” that has led each entity to release different homicide-rate data. In 2013, the Security Secretariat affirmed a homicide rate of 75.1 per 100,000 people due to 6,427 violent deaths, while the Observatory of Violence placed it at 79 per 100,000 people. A report from the United Nations went further and asserted that the homicide rate in the country was 90.4 per 100,000 people.
