EspañolFamous Cuban folk singer Silvio Rodríguez said in an interview published on Wednesday that he has come to realize how poor quality of life is on the island, as he travels the country on tour. He says his shows have helped him “connect with the reality” of Cubans.
The founder of the “nueva trova” music wave said people want “a better future,” and that many Cubans believed that progress would come with communism.
“When I sang inviting people to have faith in Cuba’s future, I wasn’t thinking about this future. I thought the future was going to be different,” Rodríguez said in the interview.
The progressive songwriter also touched on a political hot button: Cuba’s almost complete lack of internet access. Regarding the government’s position on the issue, he said: “We’ll see what happens when Google puts their 180 satellites into orbit, providing internet access to those parts of the world that are still not connected, including Cuba, I assume.”
