EspañolOn Thursday, Cuban dissident Jorge Luis García Pérez, known as “Antúnez,” was released from prison after five days and is now under house arrest with an injunction for public disorder.
Antúnez told Noticias Martí that he will remain under house arrest until his trial, but said he would not abide by “laws or regulations that restrict” his rights.
The opposition leader also noted that throughout his detention at the Police Training Unit of the City of Santa Clara he faced long interrogations while handcuffed, but was never struck, as his his wife, Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, had previously claimed. He said police simulated beating another inmate in order to mislead his wife, who was being held in another cell.
“If today I am in my home with my family, it’s not the result of government action, but rather due to the strong democratic pressure inside and outside Cuba for my release,” said Antúnez, alluding to a letter that called for his immediate liberation signed by the leader of the Ladies in White movement, Berta Soler, and Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas, among others.
