On Thursday, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) condemned Brazilian police aggression against at least 17 journalists during the 2014 World Cup. IAPA called on Brazilian authorities to investigate complaints and to remain vigilant in preventing such violent acts that “affect the public’s right to information.”
IAPA noted that, between June 12 and June 18, at least 17 journalists were attacked while covering demonstrations organized in protest of the World Cup.
“We are concerned that dozens of journalists have been beaten and prevented from doing their work, in most cases by security forces,” said the IAPA’s Chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information Claudio Paolillo.
According to the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism, members of the military police have been involved in 15 complaints of excessive use of force.
