EspañolOn Tuesday, Chile’s Senate passed the Promotion of Traditional Chilean Music Act, which mandates radio stations allocate 20 percent of their broadcasting time to traditional, folk music.
The bill was approved with 16 votes in its favor, six against and five abstentions. The Senate also set a deadline of June 30 for any proposed changes to the bill, which has been pending since 2007.
If the proposal goes unchanged, it will proceed to the Chamber of Deputies for its approval. Several Chilean musicians attended the Senate voting session on Tuesday to witness the discussion, such as Valentín Trujillo, Florcita Motuda, Juanita Parra, and Jorge Yáñez, among others.
