EspañolTwo Argentinean fans were arrested on Sunday for chanting racist insults at Brazilians at the Maracaná Stadium in Río de Janeiro, according to the local police. Under recent Brazilian law, these types of insults are a crime.
The local media pointed out that the couple made ape-like gestures and called the Brazilian fans “monkeys” during Argentina’s 2-1 win over Bosnia Herzegovina in Group F of the World Cup.
“Two Argentinean tourists were detained for allegedly chanting racist insults at Brazilians. They were taken to the police station, where they were interrogated and then released. The investigation is still ongoing,” said the civilian police of Río de Janeiro in a Reuters press release.
A few months ago, the Brazilian player Dani Alves was the target of racist slurs when a soccer fan threw a banana at him during a soccer match in Spain between FC Barcelona and Villareal.
