EspañolOn Wednesday evening, the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Air Workers Union (SIMARJ) declared a partial 24-hour strike, overlapping with Brazil’s 2014 World Cup inaugural match on Thursday.
Airport workers in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro confirmed they will walk out on June 12 starting at 0:00 local time. The strike will affect Galeao International Airport, the terminal for domestic flights, Santos Dumont, and airfield Jacarepagua, although SIMARJ estimates that around 80 percent of the employees at these facilities will not participate.
The union is demanding a pay raise ranging from 5.58 to 12 percent, depending on the worker’s position, among other benefits.
Meanwhile, subway workers in San Pablo, the city where the national soccer teams of Brazil and Croatia will face off, have decided against carrying out a similar measure on Thursday.
