Bolivia: Evo Morales Launches Campaign for Third Presidential Term

EspañolOn Monday in Cochabamba, Bolivian President Evo Morales launched his 2015-2020 presidential campaign, competing for a third term in office. Before approximately 500 Movement for Socialism (MAS) party supporters, Morales addressed the forum that will establish the mechanism for selection of the MAS Legislative Assembly candidates.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) called elections for October 12, in which the president, vice president, 34 senators, and 130 deputies will be chosen.

MAS, along with Evo Morales, aim to win this year’s elections with 74 percent of the votes, unparalleled in Bolivia’s history. Despite the protests earlier this month, early polling results show Morales at 38 percent, 20 points ahead of opposition candidate Samuel Doria Medina, a businessman and leader of the National Unity party.

The new Bolivian Constitution, which went into effect in 2009, opened the door for presidential reelections. Evo Morales and his vice president, Álvaro García Linera,were first elected in 2006.
