EspañolPresident of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto said on Sunday that it has become necessary to put an end to the inconsistency caused by the legalization of marijuana in some parts of the United States and the ongoing criminalization of its production in his home country.

The statements published by the Spanish newspaper El País suggest that the Mexican president could be open to following the path laid out by Washington and Colorado regarding drug laws.

In the interview, Peña Nieto recognized that marijuana legalization is a growing phenomenon and that policies aimed at fighting drug trafficking in the last 30 to 40 years have failed and should be reassessed.

“I am not in favor of legalization, as it is a matter of personal conviction. However, we can no longer follow this inconsistent route between the legalization that has been carried out in some parts, especially in the most important consumer market, the United States, while in Mexico we continue criminalizing the production of marijuana,” said Peña Nieto.
