EspañolOn Sunday, subway workers in San Pablo, Brazil, decided during a general assembly to proceed with a planned strike, despite a labor court recently outlawing it. Employees are demanding a 12 percent increase in pay, but the company is currently only offering them 8.7 percent.
A court has also imposed a R$500,000 (US$223,000) daily fine beginning on Monday until the workers return to their posts. It further declared the strike illegal, paving the way for state-run Metropolitan Company of San Pablo to terminate the employment of striking employees.
The workers are expected to vote again on Monday at 13:00 local time (16:00 GMT), after a demonstration in downtown San Pablo, where they will be joined by other social movement groups.
With major subway lines closed since last Thursday, traffic in Brazil’s largest city has been chaotic just days before the beginning of the World Cup.
