EspañolThe Attorney General’s Office of Colombia requested the International Law Enforcement Organization (Interpol) issue a red alert against María del Pilar Hurtado, the former director of the Administrative Security Department (DAS) who was granted political asylum in Panama in 2010.

The petition by Colombian authorities came after Panama’s Supreme Court decided recently that the asylum granted to Hurtado by the government of Ricardo Martinelli was unconstitutional.

However, between the decision and the formal ruling, Hurtado’s immigration status continues to be technically legal, meaning she could leave Panama without issue during that period of time. If Interpol accepts the Colombian government’s request, Hurtado’s attempt to enter any other country would be reported to Interpol, followed by detainment and deportation to Colombia.

Hurtado has pending charges waiting for her in Colombia due to her alleged role in the illegal wiretapping the DAS executed against Supreme Court judges, journalists, opponents of Álvaro Uribe’s government, and NGOs.
