EspañolEcuadorian President Rafael Correa said on Saturday that he will seek to change the national constitution to allow the indefinite reelection of all officials.
Correa, president since 2007, announced his decision during a speech at the National Assembly to report on his administration’s first year of achievements since he was reelected in 2013. The head of state said he will ask his party’s legislators (Alianza País), which currently control Congress, to put forward a constitutional amendment.

Despite having opposed limitless reelections in the past, Correa now says he’s changed his mind “after deep reflection, and taking into account that sometimes one can only choose the lesser evil, because again, I believe in the stability of institutions, so I have decided to support this initiative.”
Asked about his own candidacy for the 2017 presidential elections, Correa said Alianza País would have the final word, a matter to be decided depending on the political context of that year.
