Español The head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), James Comey, has acknowledged problems with the agency’s current policy that prohibits hiring anyone who has used cannabis in the past three years. His comments affirm that young cybersecurity experts are prone to drug use nowadays.
At a conference in New York, the FBI director was quoted by the Wall Street Journal saying, “I have to hire a great workforce to compete with those cybercriminals, and some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview.” When one attendee asked how a cannabis-using friend interested in working for the bureau should now act, Comey replied that “he should go ahead and apply.”
However, on Wednesday, during a committee hearing at the Senate, Comey denied he would change the ban and spoke against marijuana consumption.
Richard Clayton, from the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory, told the BBC it would be sensible for the FBI to review such anti-drug policies, but explained that government agencies usually “have more problem recruiting people because of the salaries they pay, which compare poorly with the salaries available in the private industry.”
