EspañolAs previously reported by the PanAm Post, the new Cuban outlet 14ymedio launched on Wednesday, May 21. Created by prize-winning dissident blogger Yoani Sánchez, the website features both news and analysis from a group of Cuban writers who have struggled to exercise press freedoms on the Caribbean island.
On its website, 14ymedio defines itself as “the result of a personal adventure that has evolved into a collective project.” After the success of Sánchez’s blog, Generation Y, where she told everyday stories of life in Cuba, now other Cuban bloggers have joined her to promote independent journalism and debate on the island.
In its opening manifesto, 14ymedio commits itself to bringing information to the Cuban people, as it is the poorly-connected island’s first independent digital outlet. However, on Wednesday afternoon, Agence France Press reported that the new website has already been blocked in Cuba, and instead redirects users to a website insulting Sánchez.
Reuters reports 14ymedio received about US$150,000 in anonymous donations for its initial funding.
