EspañolRepresentatives of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) of Venezuela met on Sunday with the Vatican’s nuncio and three UNASUR delegates who arrived in Caracas to try to renew talks between the Venezuelan government and the opposition. Last week, the representatives had unexpectedly canceled their visit.
Ramon Guillermo Aveledo, MUD’s spokesman, described the meeting as “very productive,” but hinted that, so far, the dialogue remains “frozen.” Aveledo said “it’s up to the government now,” explaining that the opposition gave the nuncio and the foreign ministers of Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia a list of the conditions for resuming talks.
“The demands are very simple; one does not sit down just for chatter, this is not a social gathering, a party,” said MUD’s spokesman, who stressed that he is asking the government to seriously address the issue of releasing jailed protesters and creating an independent truth commission, among other requests.
“They (UNASUR’s representatives) will talk to Maduro’s administration and explain our point of view. We’ll then see what the government’s attitude is,” explained Aveledo, who insisted, however, that the talks are “necessary.” Negotiations were launched on April 10, but stopped on May 12, after police targeting of student demonstrations escalated.
