Español Many fast-food employees at restaurants like McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and KFC are due to strike around the world on May 15, as announced by advocacy group Fast Food Forward on Wednesday. In 150 cities across the United States, dissatisfied workers plan to walk off the job and demand a raise to a minimum of US$15 per hour.
In as many as 33 countries, fast-food employees seeking higher pay will coordinate a global walk-out in protest for more generous compensation. The strike’s announcement, at a New York City McDonald’s yesterday, has support from workers and union leaders across the globe represented by the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, and Tobacco Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF).
The Manhattan-based group leading the protests has pioneered the “Fight for 15″ campaign since 2012. The protest movement spread last year to about 100 cities, including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, and Memphis, and those efforts have reportedly attracted fast-food workers in Argentina, Morocco, Japan, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and the Dominican Republic, among other locations.
