EspañolOn Monday, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elías Jaua greeted Cuban spy René González in the Caracas International Airport — González’s first trip since his release release from prison in 2011.
According to the official Cuban narrative, González is a “hero” of the revolution. He is one of the five individuals convicted and imprisoned by the United States in 1998. The charges against him and his partners included spying services to anti-Castro groups in Florida. The Cubans alleged they were in anti-terrorists activities.
González consequently served his conviction with 13 years of prison and three years of probation.
According to his biography, published by Cuban newspaper Granma, González was born in Chicago. He went on to participate in an “internationalist mission” in Angola from 1977 to 1979, where he trained as tank driver and led various military strategies.
Yesterday at noon, González went to the “Mountain Barrack” (El Cuartel de La Montaña), where Hugo Chávez’s body remains. There he also met with the vice president, Jorge Arreaza, and his wife, one of the Chávez’s daughters. Gonzalez said to the public media he “owed Chávez this visit. I never expected these conditions. I would have wanted to give him a hug right here, but it couldn’t be. My first step here will be going to the pantheon to give him the honors he deserves.”
