EspañolAt least 17 people were killed on Sunday in a devastating series of tornadoes that wiped entire neighborhoods in the south-central United States. According to National Weather Service meteorologists that examined footage of the destruction, winds are believed to have reached 136 mph, putting this storm in the third category of the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management confirmed today that at least 16 people died in Little Rock, the town most affected by the tornadoes’ destructive paths. A county sheriff’s dispatcher reported that another resident of the neighboring town of Quapaw in Oklahoma was killed as well. The tornado touched down about 10 miles west of Little Rock at around 7 p.m. local time, then headed north, missing the state capital but tearing through the communities of Mayflower and Vilonia.
