EspañolEffective May 1, the Federal Skilled Workers Program will increase its cap to 25,000 workers per year. Immigration lawyers cite this program as one of the most popular methods of achieving entry into Canada.

There are 50 job categories under which a prospective immigrant could submit an application, with each category capped at 1,000 applications. Previously, a scant 300 applications were accepted for 24 categories. Categories now include a wide range of occupations in healthcare, information technology, engineering, and higher education.

The actual criteria for the FSWP, however, has not changed. Applicants still must demonstrate at least one year of full-time, paid experience in an eligible occupation during the last 10 years. They must also achieve an adequate score on an English or French language proficiency test that meets the standards of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

Applicants must also score at least a 67 on the FSWP’s 100-point grid, a scoring system that allows the program to determine how well an immigrant would adjust to the Canadian labor market. The program has been met with excitement and hope, and some categories are expected to reach their application maximum within a matter of days after May 1.
