EspañolOn Thursday, President Nicolás Maduro announced the creation of a new Human Rights Council, suggested by the UNASUR Foreign Ministers Committee, which came to Venezuela to act as a mediator in the conflict. The delegation, comprised of foreign ministers from 12 nations of the region, visited Caracas and held meetings with the government and the opposition to suggest measures for a dialogue. The executive branch will be on charge of the human rights agency and will receive complaints on violations of human rights.
According to Vice President Jorge Arreaza, “President Maduro received the recommendation for the creation of a human rights agency that would report directly to the executive.” The government agency will be comprised of non-governmental organizations, municipal representatives, and other sectors. The creation of the council is part of a series of recommendations that the UNASUR committee has suggested to Nicolás Maduro’s government.
President Juan Manuel Santos has also announced, from Colombia, the creation of a group comprised of three chancellors to encourage dialogue between the government and the opposition. “Opposition leaders had a series of conditions on the dialogue, and apparently the government (of Maduro) accepted such conditions,” Santos said.
Two weeks ago, UNASUR agreed to send a committee to Venezuela due to the increase on violence during protests against Nicolás Maduro’s regime since early February.
