Canada has donated CAN$2 million to Guatemala to fund the manufacturing of “Mi Comidita,” (my little food) a powdered, fortified food supplement designed specifically for children in the first 1,000 days of life (0-3 years), a “window of opportunity” critical to their long-term well-being. The Zero Hunger Pact, spearheaded by the Guatemalan government, the World Food Programme, and the Canadian Embassy in Guatemala, is now active in the department of Totonicapán to help 3,000 pregnant and nursing mothers and their children.

Canadian Ambassador to Guatemala Stuart Savage said in a statement, “children who receive adequate nutrition, suffer fewer illnesses throughout their lives, will be more likely to complete their education and achieve their potential in the future. Thus, they are able to contribute to the development of their families and communities.”

Mi Comidita is a supplement, not a food substitute. If used correctly and with continued breastfeeding, it promises to contribute to healthy growth and development. This easy-to-prepare supplement boasts omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids, animal protein to promote healthy development, energy-dense sugar, and other vitamins and minerals. Similar to baby food, it is composed of milk, soybean oil, sugar, and other elements.
