Former President of Colombia Álvaro Uribe has won his bid to return to elected office, after Sunday’s congressional elections. His newly founded party, the Democratic Center, also had a strong showing and is now the second largest party in the Colombian Senate, with 20 out of 102 seats.
The chief policy plank of Uribe and his party is opposition to negotiations with with FARC terrorists — currently proceedingin Havana, Cuba — and their entry into the political domain. While President Juan Manuel Santos’s coalition has 47 seats in the Senate, if Conservatives or other members were to defect, that would likely prove fatal to any proposed peace deal.
