EspañolElectoral trends in Costa Rica have continued to change since the first round of voting in February. According to the latest study published by the Center for Research and Policy Studies (CIEP) from State University of Costa Rica, the candidate of the Citizen Action Party (PAC), Luis Guillermo Solís, has a wide lead over Johnny Araya, the ruling National Liberation Party (PLN) candidate.
With 64.4 percent, Solís exceeds the support obtained by Araya, who barely reaches 20.9 percent. Of the respondents, 14.7 percent didn’t express an opinion. These figures show a major evolution for Solís compared with the results of the first round, where he won with 30.64 percent of the vote, a significant majority, but not enough to obtain the presidential victory. For his part, Araya, the government candidate, scored 29.71 percent, which would mean a loss of support, according to what is reflected in the study.
According to the study, 89.8 percent of respondents plan to go to the polls for the second round, to be held on April 6; 4.2 percent plan to abstain; and 6.1 percent don’t know or refused to answer. This contrasts with the abstention in the first round, which reached 31 percent.
This survey was conducted in the period of February 3 to 13, with a sample of 1,200 adults by telephone, a margin of error of 2.83 percentage points, and a 95 percent level of confidence.
