EspañolToday, the US Department of Homeland Security will announce Chile as the only country in Latin America with visa-free travel to the United States. This goes into effect from May of 2014.
For this Visa Waiver Program, the South American country had to meet a number of requirements. That included getting its visa refusal rate to below 3 percent, implementing electronic passports, modifying the extradition treaty between the two countries, and approving several cooperation agreements for solving serious crimes, including terrorist attacks.
By just getting the new passport and filling out an online application, Chileans will have met all the requirements to enter the North American country. Also, the cost to be paid is reduced from US$160 to $14. The travel authorization will be valid for two years.
The negotiations for Chile’s entry into the Visa Waiver Program were initiated in 2010 by former President Sebastián Piñera.
