EspañolApproximately 2,000 people marched in the streets of Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, on Wednesday morning to ask for the release of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. The drug lord was arrested last Saturday by Mexican authorities in Mazatlán. The march was organized by individuals who acted anonymously by releasing pamphlets throughout the city demanding Guzmán’s freedom.
Protesters came dressed in white and were accompanied by several luxury cars loudly playing narcocorridos dedicated to Guzmán and his “exploits.” Some of the banners on display sported slogans like “Joaquín Guzmán gave us jobs, unlike corrupt politicians,” and “No to extradition.”
Two hours after the march began, roughly 200 municipal police officers arrived to disperse the crowd. The Sinaloa government subsequently issued a statement which condemned the march for “El Chapo” and “any demonstration that goes against the actions taken by law enforcement.”
