With 18 votes in favor and 12 against, the Arizona State Senate passed a bill to legalize gold and silver as legal tender. The bill would allow citizens in Arizona to exchange goods and services, for gold or silver, with no additional fines or taxes.
This would not be the first time a bill like this one has been considered in Arizona. Last year, both the House and the Senate approved a similar legislation, but Governor Jan Brewer vetoed in last May. Now, the legislation will move on to the Arizona House for consideration, and then to the governor’s desk. Even though supporters acknowledged the passage would still be difficult, they agree that a year of pressure and outreach would make it more likely.
If passed into law, Arizona could become the second state to recognize gold and silver as legal tender authorized for payments of debts and taxes.
