Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, has averted law enforcement since escaping from jail in 2001. However, that era came to an end early on Saturday, as US and Mexican officials captured him at a resort in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.
The world’s most powerful drug lord, Forbes magazine has listed him as a billionaire since 2010. Guzmán has also been on the US Drug Enforcement Administration top-10 most-wanted list for even longer.
A widely circulated photo suggests some level of beating or struggle in the apprehension, given visible bruising on Guzmán’s shoulder and face.
