Amid reports of deep corruption within the Colombian army, the defense minister has replaced the chief of the armed forces, Gen Leonardo Barrero, along with four other high-ranking officials.
Last week, Colombian news magazine Semana published an article alleging that a network of army officers had taken large amounts of funds in “kickbacks” and diverted public funds. The article prompted President Juan Manuel Santos to request a thorough investigation. The results led to the dismissal of the officers.
Colombia named General Juan Pablo Rodriguez as the new chief of the armed forces.
