The Brazilian government has received a petition with over 1 million signatures, collected by international campaign group Avaaz, formally requesting asylum for NSA leaker Edward Snowden.
The campaign was launched last December after a letter by Snowden addressed President Dilma Rousseff and offered Brazil aid in investigating NSA activity in their country.
“The Brazilian government had said it required a formal request from Snowden to grant asylum. Today, more than a million people have done what Snowden cannot and presented this request in his name,” Avaaz Director Ricken Patel told Agence France-Presse.
Snowden remains in Russia on temporary asylum that is due to expire at the end of July.
