The Costa Rican government is set to file a new complaint against Nicaragua with the International Court of Justice. The latest case, announced on Tuesday, comes after allegations of the Nicaraguan government offering Costa Rican maritime territory to international oil companies.
The issue stems from an incident in July of 2013 when Costa Rica claimed Nicaragua offered Costa Rican territory for oil concessions. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has dismissed the allegations, stating the area in question clearly falls within the country’s maritime borders, as outlined by a world court decision in November of 2012.
This announcement is the third international court case pending between the two nations. Costa Rica filed the first complaint in November of 2010, amid allegations of their northern neighbor’s seizure of Isla Portillo, a small territory located along their shared border. In December 2013, Nicaragua also filed a grievance alleging that Costa Rica’s construction of a highway near the San Juan River had caused environmental damage.
Costa Rica will present the new case at The Hague on May 8, the same day the new president takes office.
