Largest Newspaper in Costa Rica Withholds Final Poll Results

EspañolYesterday, La Nación announced it would not publish the results of a final election poll in Costa Rica. The poll was conducted by polling firm Unimer, with the results set to be released Wednesday. However, La Nación said it’s too close to election day and the paper doesn’t want to “confuse voters.” Presidential and legislative elections will take place in Costa Rica on Sunday.

According to Yanancy Noguera, editor-in-chief of La Nación, three recent polls have given contrasting results and releasing numbers this close to the election “would have generated more confusion,” though Noguera failed to clarify why.

Since the announcement, rumors suggest La Nación is concealing results that show rising support for Johnny Araya’s competing candidates. Araya is the presidential candidate for the incumbent National Liberation Party (PLN).

In 2010, La Nación published poll results five days prior to elections. That poll revealed that then PLN candidate, and current president, Laura Chinchilla was in the lead.

La Nación explained its decision not to release the results in the following tweet:
