Edgar Tamayo is set to face capital punishment on Wednesday, after a ruling that he murdered a Houston police officer in 1994, while living as an illegal immigrant in the United States. However, both the United Nations’ International Court of Justice and Mexican representatives say this act will contravene the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

Tamayo is one of 51 Mexican nationals sentenced to the death penalty in the United States, including two already executed. Secretary of State John Kerry has written a letter to Texas Governor Rick Perry, asking him to halt such proceedings, and Mexico’s foreign ministry says Tamayo’s execution “would be a clear violation of the United States’ international obligations.”
